Pubs Closing

The Pub aka The Hurlers closed today, probably for the last time. It’s the third pub to close in the village since I took this photo in 2007

Brooks’s, The Central Bar (Millers) and now The Hurlers. It’s a difficult trading time for pubs in small villages. One pub a day is closing in rural Ireland. The effects of the (futile) smoking ban, increased enforcement of the drink-driving laws and changes in peoples incomes and lifestyles mean that a lot more will close in the coming years also.

It’s a pity to see them go. The pub has been a meeting and socializing place and a part of Irish society for many years. I feel we’re losing something more than just a few places to go when we’re thirsty. I hope the remaining six pubs in the town manage to keep afloat during the tough times ahead.

Would hate to see my grandads photo end up on a skip or similar!
Can you drop me a line on here if theres any risk of that? No doubt on of us will be over soon!

Catherine, I’d say your grandad’s photo’s still there. Paddy’s still about but the bar is empty.
I may have spoken too soon about the PUB. This town always was a rumour mill.. It seems like it may be re-opened in the next couple of weeks under new management

Ya eventhough I don’t smoke a the moment(I won’t say anymore as its an ongoing battle) I think the anti smoking laws are Draconian and it’s giving these jobs worth of inspectors leave to act like little Hitlers and bully people and make them feel unwanted, little wonder people are taking to the drink at home which can be dangerous in my opinion. It’s sad to see the disintegration of rural Ireland. Don’t show the white flag folks don’t let the so called powers that be grind ye down.
