Legendz Karaoke

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

We regularly have karaoke in the bar, but Ive never seen a karaoke couple who know their stuff, get people involved, are talented themselves, and above all, appear to enjoy themselves and get involved with the various nutters around the bar ( and I’m not excluding myself in that description! ) like these guys! They’re also ably abetted by “Sausages”.

Rhubarb Vodka

Friday, July 17th, 2009

I made this Rhubarb Vodka in May so it’s ready for tasting now. You need a 700ml bottle of vodka, 3 stalks of nice red rhubarb, half a pound (250g, quarter of a bag) of sugar, and an empty litre sized bottle to put it in. Wash and cut the rhubarb into about one-inch pieces, add everything into the empty bottle and leave for eight weeks, turning it every week or so to make sure the sugar is dissolving properly. When it’s ready it’ll be a nice golden colour; strain it through a coffee filter. It’s absolutely LOVELY. There’s probably some stupid law against selling it but if you’re in, ask me and I’ll give you a drop for free! (while stocks last, terms and conditions apply you know yourself)

Guitar Man

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Like your music acoustic? No synthesizers? Come and listen to the Guitar Man next time they’re here. Pete and Stephen are good musicians (although not as good as they think they are!) and always worth a listen. This is them here last Saturday night.

The local and European elections are on June 6th and every vote counts. Here’s Ciaran McEvoy on the campaign trail for Fianna Fail.

Charlie Galligan is nearly ninety, and he’s been a Fianna Fáiler for most of that. Brendan Smith (minister for agriculture, fisheries and food) is here making a presentation to him in the pub last night. Also in the photo are Mrs Galligan, Brian Smith, Senator Diarmuid Wilson, Mary and Seamus Galligan, Caitlin Tully, Mickey Galligan and Ciaran McEvoy.

Kilnaleck loses most pubs title

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Article in this week’s Anglo-Celt. It doesn’t say where the title has gone to, because most Irish towns are losing pubs. Besides that would be just too much effort – this is the Celt after all. In typical extensively researched fashion the article goes on to say that we’re suffering from competition from the three pubs in Mountnugent and the eight in Ballinagh. They’ve added two new pubs in each of these towns :-)

Empty stools and empty glasses. Pubs closures in Kilnaleck have resulted in the town losing its title as the location with the most pubs per head of population. Publicans Joey Boylan, Pius Denneny, Tom Michael Hill and Peter Brady are photographed in Kilnaleck.
The town of Kilnaleck, which once boasted to having the highest number of pubs per head of population anywhere within the British Isles, has now lost that title following the closure of two pubs in recent times.

Hen Party

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Caitlin’s hen party was great crack. It had a builder’s theme. Here’s the Tully Sisters, Caitlin, Brid, Sinead and Maeve singing Karaoke. They need to keep the day jobs for a while yet I think. Plenty of other photos on flickr here

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I’ve decided to have a free competition every month to get you commenting and to find out if anyone really reads this. This month I’m giving a bottle of Powers 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey worth €45, sponsored by Mark at Irish Distillers.

All you have to do to enter is to comment on this post, making sure to leave your email address. In a month’s time, I’ll choose the winner using a random number generator and you could be sipping this great whiskey at the right price (FREE). Unfortunately, I don’t think it’ll be possible to ship it internationally, so if you’re from another country, you can still enter, but if you win you’ll have to nominate someone you know in Ireland to receive it. The closing date is May 19th. Only enter once, your comment may not show up right away as it has to be approved if you haven’t commented before, so don’t worry, it’ll get there shortly.

Here’s the blurb on the whiskey, it’s good stuff:

Powers 12 year old Reserve is a very special premium edition of Powers Gold Label, Ireland’s favourite whiskey. This reserve is chosen from specially selected whiskeys, aged from 12 to 24 years and is matured in carefully chosen American oak barrels. Powers 12 has that Irish characteristic strong pot still presence, which accounts for its rich full flavoured and spicy character.
