All these people were at the unveiling of the stone memorial to Doctor Galligan here in Kilnaleck today. It rained, so I’ll go up another day and get a photo of the stone itself. Here it is. A lot of them came down here to the bar for lunch afterwards and there was a good session with kids playing some great music.

Treat your mammy to lunch here next Sunday, we have a special menu for Mother’s Day which we’re sure she’ll like! Please book to be sure of a table, details on the website contact page
On Friday night 6th of February we’re holding a beach party to celebrate Bob Marley’s birthday. He would have been sixty four, although he died in May 1981 at the age of 36.
On Saturday we’re having a family celebration. My sister Eileen, brother John and sister Mary have all had new babies born in the last two months and they’re having a joint christening for Piper, Darragh and Tadhg. Afterwards there’s Karaoke with Billy O’Rourke. Everyone welcome…no voice too bad!
The Pub aka The Hurlers closed today, probably for the last time. It’s the third pub to close in the village since I took this photo in 2007

Brooks’s, The Central Bar (Millers) and now The Hurlers. It’s a difficult trading time for pubs in small villages. One pub a day is closing in rural Ireland. The effects of the (futile) smoking ban, increased enforcement of the drink-driving laws and changes in peoples incomes and lifestyles mean that a lot more will close in the coming years also.
It’s a pity to see them go. The pub has been a meeting and socializing place and a part of Irish society for many years. I feel we’re losing something more than just a few places to go when we’re thirsty. I hope the remaining six pubs in the town manage to keep afloat during the tough times ahead.
